The Killings in Wasacona
An interactive murder mystery novella
What actually happened?
Note that player actions may impact and change various events of this plotline; but, without intervention, here is how it plays out:
For about a year, Dr. Henry Black had been carrying on an affair with a student, Melody Beautrue, he first met in an introductory chemistry class. They would often have romantic get togethers in his on-campus office late at night, as well as at his house. Melody told her roommate she was “studying”.
Lately, Henry had also begun a second affair with a new, younger student – Jamal Veralin. Rumors swirled around the campus, and Melody found out, although she wasn’t sure she believed the rumors. She brought it up on that fateful Monday night, in Henry’s office, during an interlude in their sex…
Henry realized the implications if word got to the administration and community about his relations. His reputation… his job! All at stake. In the heat of the moment, he strangled Melody. Unsure what to do next, he hid the body nearby, behind the library, and placed her clothes on top of her, to make the scene confusing.
The next morning, his head was not clear, nor his worries allayed. Concerned that attention would focus on him, he decided to stage another death to distract police and community attention away from the college and the people (like him) working there.
While mulling over his concerns, his eyes fell upon Basra Brown working in the restaurant. He knew then what to do. He bought fentanyl from a known drug dealer, Leroy Jameson, and used it to surprise and inject Basra while she was most vulnerable – walking home alone, late at night, in a deserted and wooded area of the park.
However, he realized rather than improve his situation, he was perhaps now in even worse straits – he realized the drug dealer would obviously ID him! He took one of his baseball bats, since he was a member of a team, and he went back to Leroy’s camp. He killed Leroy by surprising him at night and beating him.
Would he now be safe and unsuspected? No! This left only the other student he was romancing. He called her to say he wanted to meet up and have a secret late night adventurous tryst in the park, which she agreed to, although nervously. He attacked her there brutally. However, she didn’t die right away, and was able to call for help! He quickly attacked again, and took her phone, hanging up the emergency call and turning the phone off so it couldn’t be tracked. He placed the phone in the center console of his car.
Now, he should have felt free. But he didn’t. The weight, what started as just an inappropriate relationship had turned into not one but multiple murders. His fear and guilt overwhelm him. In his bedroom, he stares at photos of him and Melody. How did this happen? What had he done? In his bathroom, he looks at the remnants of the fentanyl he purchased from Leroy. Finally, that is his escape. His final way out.
In the end, he went back to the park, a place of both peace and terror, to make his exit, to atone for his sins.
